I got a call saying my website needs to be updated for AI search, is this real?
As with all things tech related the answer is “it depends”. If you have a solid website with a solid business, then the pendulum will swing to the “not really” . As Stephen Covey noted in his seminal book “7 Habits”, begin with the end in mind. What is it that you want your website to do, and is it already doing it?
Recently a small business called in a panic because they had just spent a lot of money on a new POS system which included an integrated website. The website is ok, but its is boilerplate and looks like every other clients of the POS system.
So What’s The Problem?
For this business, the website is really a place for members to order, it isn’t a huge draw to new people or visitors. The majority of new visitors are from festivals or driving by.
Every business owner thinks they want to be the next Apple but they have no idea how “The Steve’s” did it. I was there and I will tell you it wasn’t an easy path. For this particular client they only have about 10% excess capacity each year. This can be good or bad depending on the business model.
The owner called me for AI advice. When we were finished, the website was fine as is and was moving in the right direction. It was the rest of his business that was ripe for AI. His wife ran the retail end so I set up a meeting with her.
